NKT carried out an important and challenging underground cable project for the Greek transmission grid: to provide an interconnection between Greece’s 2nd largest island, Euboea, and the Greek mainland. The significant technical challenges of this turnkey project included an under-sea section at the Chalcis Suspension Bridge, with several long drillings beneath the seabed. The full scope of the project included the design, supply and installation of two complete 13.5 km circuits of 400 kV underground cables, as well as all construction work and testing. The project was originally commissioned by the Public Power Corporation SA, Greece’s biggest power company, and subsequently handed over to ADMIE, SA, (through the reassignment of transmission tasks according to changes in Greek law). Work on the project was successfully completed in August 2013.
