NAaN, New Zealand

In 2014 NKT completed a complex three and a half-year project to reinforce and improve electricity transmission in the Auckland urban area, a heavily-populated part of New Zealand. The work was commissioned by Transpower, the state-owned enterprise responsible for electric power transmission in New Zealand. It involved the supply and installation of a total of 19 km of specially-developed underground cable under challenging conditions that called for the highest possible operational standards, particularly in safety and risk-awareness. The challenges included a 9 km tunnel installation alongside other live circuits, plus installation along roads and bridges in a busy urban environment. In addition to the substantial operational, technical and logistic challenges, NKT overcame cultural and geographical difficulties entailed by a truly global project that involved participants in New Zealand and Australia, across Europe, and in other locations around the world.
