Evaluate alternative peroxides in EPDM recipes
We are looking for positive and enthusiastic students who wants to perform their master thesis work within the field of material engineering. The topic of this thesis is to find and evaluate different peroxides in EPDM model recipes.
NKT is a major player in the area of HVAC and HVDC cable systems, and the need of energy transmission from the source of energy production, e.g. wind farms, over long distances is ever increasing. At NKT in Alingsås, we are developing and producing cable accessories, i.e. joints and terminations for both HVAC and HVDC. One of our goals is to “go green”, meaning that we want to avoid the use of materials that are assessed as potential HSE risk in the REACH system. One of the most commonly used peroxides for the cable industry is dicumyl peroxide, and it has come under scrutiny due to HSE risks.
Evaluate different peroxides
The thesis work contains both practical and theoretical elements, where the majority of the work will comprise of small scale compounding, with subsequent analysis of the materials. The focus of the work is to find and evaluate different peroxides with respect to HSE, curing characteristics, mechanical and electrical properties. The curing characteristics are critical for the production procedure of EPDM rubber parts, where the curing should be fast enough to increase production capacity, but slow enough to prevent scorch, i.e. pre-curing of the material before shaping of the final rubber part. When the peroxide reacts, peroxide decomposition products are formed that might have an adverse effect on the electrical properties of EPDM, such as conductivity and permittivity of the material.
The main part of the thesis work will be performed at our site in Alingsås, but some time for e.g. literature studies etc. can be performed at Chalmers.
