NKT is stronger than ever to meet the future of Telecom energy cables
With over 40 years of experience of energy cables in the telecom industry, we are a reliable partner for our global customers. We offer cost-efficient quality telecom energy cables for site solutions by working closely with our customers and continuously shaping our product range.
The cables are developed in close cooperation with the telecom industry. As the industry has changed from traditional cabinet base stations to distributed radio units and small cell radio systems, so our telecom energy cables have been fully optimised with regard to cost, performance, installation and maintenance.
A broad range of different designs for indoor and outdoor installation means cost-efficient energy cables for almost any site solution. Due to flexible production set-up, our customers can expect delivery with short lead times.
CPR is a common classification of fire properties and it is a regulatory requirement in Europe for cables used in buildings. There has been discussion as to whether CPR is applicable to telecom cables. On the one hand, a telecom cable is not part of the building construction and therefore not part of the regulations. On the other hand, any industry cable inside a building is affected and must follow CPR.
As a result of this discussion, the market is starting to consider CPR as a requirement for all telecom cables inside buildings, for safety reasons, for simplicity and to save time. This avoids potential discussions with property owners and simplifies installation. For this reason, NKT telecom cables already comply with CPR.
The telecom journey started with energy cables for fixed line before NMT and then GSM. While the technologies improved towards 3G (WCDMA), 4G (LTE) and now 5G, so have the energy cables that power them. This is exemplified by halogen-free cables which NKT pioneered 30 years ago in the telecom industry which has since become the standard. Today we are leading the telecom energy cable development by introducing new aluminum cables to power the next generation antennas and conforming to the CPR classification. Due to our experience and continuous improvement we are the globally preferred supplier to Ericsson and approved by Nokia in US.
The large production capacity of NKT is combined with a strong competence in energy cable manufacturing for many years in several different industries and countries. With our high service level and focus on short lead times, we live up to our promise as a reliant business partner for time-critical projects on a global scale. We prioritize our customers’ needs offering specific products and development upon request. Therefore, NKT counts global operating telecom vendors its customers as well as highly specialized niche players. In addition, we have a strong history of innovation, continuously working on latest technology requirements and developing designs according to our comprehensive industry knowledge.
Typical telecom tower site showing the different energy cables in use. The illustration is displaying both scenarios with separate power cables to each radio (left) and one multi cable to feed several radios via a connection box (right).
The power cables connect from power distribution unit on ground to the radios mounted in the tower close to the antennas. Grounding cables connect any equipment (radios, cabinets etc.) to earth terminal. Battery cables connect power distribution unit to the backup batteries.
