About us

+125 years of experience

With presence in 18 countries and 37 locations and some of the markets most modern manufacturing facilities in Germany, Sweden, Poland, Czech, Norway and Denmark, NKT is a world leader in the cable technology.

Founded in 1891 during the second industrial revolution as Nordisk Elektrisk Ledningstråd og kabel-fabrik, the company pioneered the cable industry in the Nordics. In 1898, the company became listed on the stock exchange in Copenhagen under the name Nordiske Kabel- og Traadfabriker (NKT).

Between 1919 and 1933, Nordiske Kabel- og Traadfabriker acquired a number of Danish companies, and its position in the European market was reinforced with the acquisition of the German company Felten & Guilleaume Kabelwerke GmbH in 1999. From there NKT began expanding its presence and influence across the globe. Since 2000, NKT has acquired companies in Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Australia, most recently the Ericsson power cable operations (2013) and ABB HV Cables (2017), both Sweden.

Our dedication to regeneration of the environment is for example NKT introduced the first ways to recycle cable scrap in 1960 and later we launched the world's first lead-free cable. Our commitment to environmental issues has lead to two awards. In 1991 our recycling plant in Stenlille won the EU environmental for our innovative use of jelly in recycling cables. In 2002 NKT received an EU environmental award for the development and marketing of PVC and halogen free NOPOVIC® cables. In recent years we have underlined our focus on sustainability with the opening of a factory in Cologne, Germany, designed to considerably reduce energy consumption and adding another state-of the art factory in Karlskrona, Sweden.

Today, NKT masters the fourth industrial revolution, with our energy transportation expertise, and cost-effective manufacturing facilities at the highest technological level. Our extensive experience has taught us that the most valuable solutions, from high quality cables to electrical infrastructure, and turnkey deliveries, are created with a “glocal” mind-set through trusted partnerships, and a shared willingness to embrace and drive change.

As the timeline shows below, one of the secrets of success is our ability to keep on top of the latest changes in technology and society.
