Production Sites

Cologne, Germany

Cologne is NKT’s high-voltage production site for land cable systems in Germany. The site manufactures high-voltage AC and DC power cables for major onshore transmission projects.

NKT is making significant investments in Cologne to expand production capacity and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities for future transmission projects.

Karlskrona, Sweden

Karlskrona is NKT’s high-voltage production site for subsea cable systems in Sweden. The site manufactures AC and DC cable systems for offshore wind and interconnector projects.

NKT is making major investments in Karlskrona to expand both production capacity and capability for high-voltage offshore cables. The expansion will significantly strengthen the site’s ability to support future subsea cable projects.

Asnaes, Denmark

Asnaes manufactures low-voltage cables up to 1 kV, as well as medium- and high-voltage power cables. The site supports distribution applications in Nordic and wider European markets. Since 2024, investments in new production and testing facilities, including a new production hall, together with optimised workflows, have significantly increased output for grid and renewable energy applications.

Falun, Sweden

Falun manufactures low- and medium-voltage cables, as well as high-voltage cables up to 170 kV, primarily for Nordic and European markets. The site also combines production with development and testing capabilities.

Alingsas, Sweden

Alingsas specialises in high-voltage cable accessories for onshore and offshore installations. The site develops, tests, and manufactures joints, terminations, connectors, and related components. It also includes a training centre for accessory assembly and installation.

Nordenham, Germany

Nordenham specialises in medium-voltage cable accessories. The site develops, tests, and manufactures joints, terminations, connectors, and related components. It also includes a training centre for assembly and installation.

NKT pioneered the use of silicone rubber in cable accessories at Nordenham in the 1960s. The site continues to build on this materials expertise in the development of today’s medium-voltage accessories.

Expand power cable production for future grid demands

NKT continues to invest in its production capacity and manufacturing capabilities as electricity networks grow and modernise. We are expanding key sites and strengthening our ability to support increasing demand for high- and medium-voltage cable systems.

Current investment includes the expansion of Karlskrona and additional medium- and high-voltage capacity at European production sites. Further development is also planned in Esposende. These investments strengthen NKT’s manufacturing footprint and help prepare production for future grid and energy infrastructure needs. Across our production sites, we also use 100% renewable electricity.

Manage power cable production and supply risk

Multi-site power cable production can protect project delivery when more than one qualified factory can manufacture the required cable system. Each site must meet the same design, quality, testing, and capacity requirements. NKT assesses the technical scope and project schedule across its production sites and, where suitable alternatives exist, can allocate production across qualified locations while maintaining the agreed cable-system specification.

Manufacturing capacity can be secured by planning early. Cable lengths, testing, delivery stages, and installation dates all need to be considered while the project programme is being developed. Early planning identifies factory and logistics constraints before they affect delivery. NKT combines cable-system expertise with production planning across suitable sites to define a suitable manufacturing route and support the project schedule.

Consistent cable-system quality is maintained by using the agreed design and approved materials at every qualified production site. Manufacturing processes, testing, documentation, and traceability must also meet the applicable project requirements. NKT coordinates engineering, manufacturing, testing, and quality controls across its production sites so that each location meets the applicable project and qualification requirements.

Factory capabilities can influence how a cable system is produced and delivered. Achievable production lengths may affect joint quantities, while testing, transport, and handling requirements can influence the delivery and installation sequencing. These factors must be aligned with the cable-system design and delivery programme. NKT connects manufacturing expertise with engineering, testing, logistics, and installation planning so that the cable system can be produced and delivered within the agreed project conditions.

Regional production can reduce dependence on distant manufacturing regions and long international transport routes. It can also simplify logistics between the factory and the project location. The benefit depends on the cable design, project destination, production programme, and transport requirements. NKT’s production sites across Europe allow suitable manufacturing capabilities to be aligned more closely with key markets and delivery needs.
