NKT has delivered the 320 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) export power cable system for Dogger Bank A located in the UK part of the North Sea. This is the first of three phases of the Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farm owned by Equinor, SSE Renewables and Vårgrønn which will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm when fully operational. NKT has designed, manufactured and installed the onshore HVAC, on- and offshore HVDC power cable systems for Dogger Bank A and is also the export cable supplier for the coming phases Dogger Bank B and C.
- First power generation at Dogger Bank A marks a milestone for offshore wind in the UK. We are proud to deliver the first HVDC export cable system for an offshore wind farm in the UK and to be selected as cable supplier for all three phases of the Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farm. The successful execution of Dogger Bank A underlines our execution capabilities and leading position in handling very large turnkey projects, says Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions Karlskrona in NKT.
Dogger Bank Wind Farm Project Director, Olly Cass, says:
- This milestone marks a major step forward for our industry that wouldn’t have been possible without the ingenuity of our supply chain partners and commitment of our lenders. We thank each and every one of them for their role in our journey to first power. Together we’re creating a greener and more secure energy system for UK homes and businesses and for future generations.
The power cables for Dogger Bank A were manufactured at the NKT factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, which runs on 100% renewable electricity minimizing the carbon footprint of the cable system. As part of the environmental focus of the operation, the installation of the submarine power cable systems was completed by NKT Victoria, one of the most energy efficient cable-laying vessel in the industry.
NKT completed the project according to the time schedule and within the budget after efficient collaboration between all parties involved.
When all three phases are fully operational, Dogger Bank will have an installed capacity of 3.6 GW and will be the first HVDC-connected offshore wind farm in the UK. Dogger Bank B is expected to be fully operational in 2025 and Dogger Bank C in 2026.
