About us

Social responsibility

NKT strive to maintain and develop their position as market leaders while supplying high quality products to our customers. Yet in addition, we do not forget the social responsibility that comes with our position as a major company, and have also made great efforts to make our workplace safe, happy and secure, as well as having made great strides in environmental friendliness and sustainability. Our work does not end there, however, and NKT have also been at the forefront of many other efforts for social progress:

UN Global Compact

NKT is a signatory of the UN Global Compact, and we believe that a healthy, safe, secure and diverse working environment is not only inherently desirable but also fundamental to our continuous growth. We understand the role of NKT in creating a better future by our contribution to UN Sustainable Development Goals of 2030.

The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative for businesses with the aim to combine moral authority and the power of the UN with the private sector’s knowledge and business power. We are committed to working with the UN and other businesses and industries around the world to support broader social goals, such as the battle against poverty and care for limited resources. The UNGC clearly stated these goals in the following ten principles:

Human rights

Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;

Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and

Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;

Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and

Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

NKT is delighted to see the UN and businesses around the world work to achieve these goals and enthusiastically endorses all of the above principles, and works to help make them a reality.

Diversity and Non-discrimination

We are also firmly committed to providing equal opportunity for our employees and in external relationships, and guarantee not to tolerate discrimination or harassment based on race, colour, gender, language, privacy, religion, ethnicity, political or other opinions, caste, national or social origin, property, birthplace, union affiliation, sexual orientation, health status, age, disability, or any other distinguishing characteristics. We are firmly committed to providing equal opportunity to our employees and will not tolerate discrimination or harassment.

Freedom of Association

We also support and will not interfere with our employees’ freedom to voluntarily establish and join organisations of their own choice, including labour unions. We believe that working closely with our employees, listening to their needs and liaising with them to find out how things can be improved not only allows for a better working relationship, but also allows us to develop as a company and make significant progress in new areas.

Child labor

We condemn and will never tolerate the use of child labour.

Forced labor

We condemn and will never tolerate the use of forced labour, including involuntary prison labour.

Health and Safety

We strive to provide each employee of NKT with a safe and healthy work environment, and accordingly implement precautionary measures to help protect our employees from work related hazards.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)

The scope and monitoring of NKT’ Corporate Social Responsibility activities are inspired by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and indicators are selected based on a relevance and materiality assessment. The main elements of monitoring embrace legal entities worldwide and include data collection of a number of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) covering parameters such as occupational injuries, CO2 emissions, utilization of raw materials, ensuring anti-corrupt behavior and events such as environmental spills. The business units are responsible for data collection and KPI quality. An annual Statement of Representation on CSR is signed by all local managers in the business units, certifying their familiarity with and active commitment to the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact.

Reporting according to UK Modern Slavery Act

Our Human & Labour Rights policy clearly states that we reject any form of forced labour and do not condone the hiring of child labour. At NKT, employees have employment contracts, they are educated in our Human & Labour Rights policy, and they are committed to continuously identifying and eliminating potential violations.

NKT business partners are expected to comply with the principles of our Global Third Party Compliance Policy and our Business Code of Conduct for Vendors & Business Partners, in which our Human & Labour Rights Policy for Suppliers is also an integral part. In 2018 we strengthened our supplier qualification process to ensure transparency of compliance with both these instruments.
